Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Alameen.
Wa salatu wa salamu ala ash-shadab fil anbiya wal mursaleen Muhammadur Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa ala alihi wa sallam.
Tasliman kathiran kathira.
From Abadu, my brother asked me a question just now.
And he said, is cigarette smoking haram?
So I answered his question, but before I answer that for you,
let me expand this a little more so you understand the principle.
The principle of the Sharia as far as things which are prohibited, haram, forbidden, haram.
There are two principles.
One, everything which is prohibited is intrinsically by itself harmful.
Islam does not prohibit anything which has benefits.
Everything in Islam which is prohibited is by itself intrinsically harmful.
So it is something which even if you did not have a specific rule for that,
as a sensible, intelligent, knowledgeable human being,
you would not indulge in that, you would not use it because it is harmful.
So first principle.
Second principle is that when something is prohibited,
when something is haram,
then everything associated with it is also haram.
Right?
So this piece, please understand, is very important.
If something is haram, if something is prohibited,
then everything connected with it is also haram.
It’s also prohibited.
Let me give you an example before I come to cigarettes.
Take for example, alcohol.
Alcohol, consumption of alcohol, meaning drinking alcohol,
drinking alcohol is haram.
Drinking alcohol of any kind.
Now with alcohol by inference, we also mean anything which is addictive,
anything which alters the mind.
So all forms of drugs, all forms of narcotics, all of these are prohibited.
They’re all haram.
Number one.
Number two, anything which is haram is haram irrespective of quantity.
So it is not that you must, that the whole bottle of alcohol is haram.
One drop is also haram.
One puff on a joint, on a marijuana cigarette is haram.
Pork is haram.
One gram of pork is haram.
One rasher of bacon is haram.
One sausage is haram.
The whole pig is haram.
So irrespective of quantity, it’s not the question of how many.
It’s the question, if it is haram, it’s haram.
And then I said, everything associated.
Now for example, you might say, well, pork is haram.
I’m not eating pork.
But I have a restaurant in which we serve ham sandwiches and bacon sandwiches.
Right?
I have a pizza shop and we are selling pepperoni pizza.
Is it permitted?
No.
Even though you are not eating it, you are not allowed to do anything concerning that.
You might say, I’m not eating it.
I’m not selling it.
I’m not buying it.
But I have a truck in which I transport pigs.
Haram.
I have a pig farm.
Haram.
I have a share in a company which raises pigs.
I have not even seen the company.
I’ve not gone anywhere near it.
I just, on the road.
I have a share.
On the share market, stock market, I bought some shares.
This company deals in pork products.
Haram.
Right?
Everything do with it.
Now I don’t think I need to give you more examples.
You can figure out your own examples.
There are plenty of examples I can give you.
Fundamental principle, if it is haram, number one, it is harmful by itself.
Number two, it is haram irrespective of quantity.
And number three, everything associated with it is haram.
Now we come to the specific question which my brother asked about cigarettes.
Are cigarettes harmful or beneficial?
Go to a doctor, ask him.
I want to improve my health.
How many cigarettes a day should I smoke?
Does any doctor ever tell you you must at least smoke one packet a day, you know, good
for your health, good for your life?
People may dispute.
I mean, first of all, there’s no dispute now.
There’s no dispute now.
To say that cigarette smoking causes, there is a long list of stuff.
It’s not only lung cancer.
Lung cancer is definitely there.
But even other than that, many cardiac issues, many kinds of issues.
Find me one person who said that cigarette smoking is beneficial for you, good for your
health.
Nobody.
So it is harmful.
Number two, Rasulullah said, one of the signs of the people of Jahannam will be that, you
know, the smoke will come out of their mouth.
Now, that does not mean you go and you see somebody smoking, you go and pronounce the
fatwa and say, you are from Jahannam.
No, that’s not your job, right?
But why would you want to do something which resembles somebody from Jahannam?
The smoking coming out, smoke coming out of the mouth is a sign of the people who are
in Jahannam.
It does not mean if you smoke, you are from Jahannam.
It does not mean you are from Jahannam.
It does not mean you are from Jahannam.
If you smoke, you are definitely in Jahannam.
You know, you are not.
Because we come to the last part which I will talk about, Tawbah.
But point is, nasty thing to do.
And therefore, it is haram because it is intrinsically harmful.
It is haram because it resembles something which is nasty, which is people of Jahannam.
And it is haram because it is a waste of resources.
You are paying money.
Pay the bribe.
Why?
It sounds rather brilliant, I mean you are paying sacrifice.
Do you know, a will of family, homeland, property, agricultural returns, kind of stuff.
You pay the after paying from that money, whatever we say actual compensation, property
goes home.
But it is far more嬌anam than that money you are taking for yourself.
For example, you have given to you.
Inborough, you give, in my case this is tablet my liquor.
I rent it for entry fees.
Buildings that was in myINA.
Intrabr Touch that I bought.
The power of God.
So if you want to burn $10, go burn $10.
It’s also a form of slavery.
Right?
It is also addictive.
So it’s a kind of, you know, you might say slavery.
So because the point is that something haram, irrespective of quantity, intrinsically harmful,
and then it is anything to do with it.
So therefore, with cigarettes, buying them, selling them, transporting them, storing them,
every single thing is haram.
That income you get from that is haram.
What does that mean?
It means that on that income, you cannot even pay zakat.
Zakat is not acceptable from haram income.
So you are going to go before Allah SWT with your zakat unpaid, even though you thought you paid it.
Not a good position to be in.
Right?
Now,
think about that.
Why do people still do it?
People do it because somewhere shaitan has told you that unless you do that,
you will not be able to feed your family.
Unless you do that, you will not have jobs.
Unless I sell cigarettes in my shop, I will not have anyone who will come and buy from me.
My question to you is, who is your radhak?
Who is the one who feeds you?
The cigarette shop or Allah?
We just prayed here.
To who?
Do you have a box of 555 in front of me?
Taking such and such cigarettes?
Who did we preach Islam to?
To who?
To Allah SWT.
So if I have this belief in my heart, may Allah protect us from ourselves, that my Rabb is so weak,
now with Billah, that he cannot feed me unless I do something haram.
My question is, why do you pray?
Why do you pray to such a weak Rabb who can’t even feed you?
Right?
Think about it.
If you have a cat, if you have a dog,
that cat or dog does not even imagine that a day will come when you will not be able to feed it.
It has this complete trust.
My master will feed me.
Period.
That thing does not even occur, doesn’t even go into his heart or mind to say,
maybe one day this guy is going to be out of a job.
Maybe he will not have any money.
Maybe I will starve.
So let me pile something up.
We don’t even have as much faith as our dog has in its master.
Then I say I’m a Muslim.
What kind of Muslim is this?
What kind of Muslim is this?
Right?
Ask yourself.
Let us work on our Iman.
Who is Allah?
Rabbul Alameen.
Rabbul Arshi Al-Kareem.
Rabbi Samawati Wal Ard.
Badiwa Sawati Wal Ard.
Khaliqu Sawati Wal Ard.
Khali kulli asya wal ahwal.
Khaliquna wa raziquna wa maliquna wa aakim alayna.
Khaliquna wa raziquna wa maliquna wa aakim alayna.
He is the creator of the heavens and the earth.
He is the originator of the heavens and the earth.
He has created everything which exists.
All the material things and all the conditions.
Manu wa Khaliqul Ahwal.
Who is the creator of the Ahwal, of the Hal?
Allah.
This is the one we worship.
And you think that one cannot give you a piece of bread?
Here we meet the Noor.
You know, when we’re eating
bread, when we’re eating food or saying theima,
or praying maalikum,
we should just eat.
Even if we don’t have maalikum,
and we have heard maalikum.
They say you can eat a little leftovers than meal.
You have to say,
diya leelahi wa inna liaghatiyaun.
Imagine the Sahaba,
They say we don’t care.
Rain comes from the sky, he says we don’t care.
These are all asbabs, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala happens to produce it like this.
But if the earth turned to iron, I can’t plant anymore.
Sky turned to copper, no rain.
I don’t care.
I don’t care.
All I can see is now my Rabb is going to provide me in a way which I never provided before.
Completely new ways.
Lighter, I say wow fantastic.
Now let me see what Allah does.
Alhamdulillah.
I just lost my job.
Brilliant.
Alhamdulillah.
Who wants to work anyway?
Let Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala feed me.
Maryam alaihi salam wasn’t working.
Ya Maryam, where is this come from?
He says from my Rabb.
He gives to whoever he wants without any accounting.
How is Allah saying no?
And start publish this
piece of willstüradte two harνε managers.
I don’t want your ideas.
Cardinal, so, how’ll I forget about it.
Where are the three or commission letters?
Halal earnings.
If the earning is haram or the food we eat is haram,
Ibadah, gone.
Dua, not accepted.
Why would you want that?
Why would anyone want to do something
which cancels out his worship?
You take all the time and trouble to come out of your house,
you come to the masjid, you make wudu,
you’re standing in sala, you’re praying behind the imam,
you’re reading the quran, everything is zero
because your income is haram.
Because you’re eating without checking
whether it is zawiha or not,
whether it is hand slaughter or not,
you don’t know what is mixed in it,
you don’t check those things, you just eat it
and you say, no, I said bismillah.
What is that?
So if you say bismillah and drink alcohol,
it becomes water?
Simple question.
If you say bismillah
and drink
and eat something which is non zawiha,
which is machine slaughtered, roadkill,
machine slaughtered is a roadkill, right?
If you eat something haram
and you say bismillah, I said so it became halal,
so my question is,
then why don’t you give me a bottle of whiskey
and I’ll say bismillah and drink it because water?
Does it happen?
So how come this happens?
Please, stop fooling yourself.
You fool nobody.
We can only fool one person in the world.
You know who that is?
Look in the mirror.
My brothers and sisters,
please understand, nobody is so smart.
Don’t think you are so smart, you fool the world.
No, you fool nobody.
You fool only yourself.
Stop fooling yourself.
Stop lying to yourself.
Saying bismillah does not convert a haram thing into halal.
Simple as that.
It has to be halal.
Go and check.
Very simple example I’ll give you.
Supposing you are allergic to something.
People have nut allergy, for example, right?
So my point is, if you are allergic to something
and there’s this fantastic buffet, beautiful, you know, lots of wonderful dishes
and somebody says, you know, hold on a second, you are allergic to nuts, right?
Well, one of these things has nuts.
What will you do?
You say, Salaam alaikum.
I’m going home.
Right?
I can’t take a risk because if I take a risk, then I will be in hospital or I will be dead.
Not you.
You can tell me whatever you want.
No, brother.
No problem.
Alhamdulillah.
Say bismillah and eat.
Please stop fooling yourself.
What Allah made halal is tayyib.
It is pure.
It is good.
It is wholesome.
It is beneficial.
What Allah made haram is the opposite.
It is harmful.
It is something to be stay far away from.
Don’t eat it.
Don’t drink it.
Don’t touch it.
Don’t transport it.
Don’t buy it.
Don’t sell it.
Don’t be in anything.
Don’t have anything to do with it.
This is Islam.
We ask Allah to help us to do what He has commanded us to do and to do that in the way of His Habib Muhammad
because this is khair and this is barakah.
And we ask Allah to save us from anything that does not fit into that.
