In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
And peace and blessings be upon the hearts of the prophets and messengers.
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and upon his family.
And peace and blessings be upon him and upon his family.
Fahima Badu, my brothers and sisters.
One of the things that is very commonly known and reported about the way the Sahaba,
Ridwanullahi alaihi wa ajma’in, used to sit in the presence of Rasulullah .
Two things that were the hallmarks of their manners, or three things rather.
One was that they would sit as close to the Prophet as they could.
So right up in front of the Mimbar, as close to the Prophet .
To the extent that in the famous Hadith Jibreel, after mentioning the appearance of Jibreel ,
the first thing he says is that he came and he sat with his knees touching the knees of Rasulullah .
Now just think about that.
Not only does that show how close he would have been to the Prophet ,
but it also shows that the only, if you think about it, the only way you can sit facing somebody with your knees touching his knees,
is when you are sitting in a position of Tashahud.
Right? You are in that position when we sit in Tashahud, kneeling down.
So this is the respect.
And Jibreel is the Prince of the Malaika.
He is the head of the Malaika.
He is himself a Rasul of Allah .
That is the reverence for Rasulullah and obviously for what he represents.
Because this is not only love for the individual, it’s love and respect for what he represents as the Rasul of Allah .
He is the Messenger of Allah .
So in our context today, it is the reverence that we need to have and show with respect to what he said,
with his Hadith, with respect to what he brought, which is the Kalam of Allah himself .
So the first thing that is mentioned about the way the Sahaba used to sit was that they sat very close to the members.
They didn’t sit on the edges of the circle.
They didn’t sit on the edges of the Masjid.
They definitely didn’t sit with their back to the Masjid.
They didn’t sit on the edges of the Masjid.
They definitely didn’t sit with their back to the Masjid.
backs to the wall of the masjid and their legs extended out you know towards the khibla and
towards the position of rasulallah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam they definitely didn’t do that
so people who do that which is the norm seems to be in this country should find the dalil for this
what is your dalil for sitting in the masjid when there’s no uzar right it’s not as if you’re an old
man and your back won’t keep you up so you need some support for your back in that case you sit
in a chair but you sit with your back to the wall with your feet extended in the direction of the
khibla and we have the shelves which are full of mushafs the quran right in the same place
so your feet are extended towards the quran your feet are extended towards the khibla your feet
are extended in the face of the teacher the face of the khatib the face of the alim the face of the
imam
the face of the imam
i mean how evil and how disgusting and how ill-mannered is that but we find this is common
we find children sitting like that so-called children because these are children with beards
so these are you know young adults uh they are not even some are teenagers some are beyond
being teenagers and tragedies we also see their parents sitting like that and my question is
especially the parents the children some of these youngsters were born here but especially
the parents not a single one of them was born in this country so you were born in a country where
if you did that somebody would literally beat you probably so you desire you were
raised to show respect to the kitab Allah to show respect to the imam to show respect to the masjid
so what happened to that how come you don’t practice it anymore and you have not taught
your children to practice that anymore how terrible terrible terrible is that
so that is the first thing sitting in a respectful position sitting close
close to the member, close to the speaker, close to the teacher.
Second one is which is reported about the Sahaba was they sat absolutely still.
They didn’t fidget.
They didn’t fiddle.
They didn’t move around.
They didn’t do the equivalent of what we see the whole time,
which is pulling out your phone and, you know, with your face in the phone.
Obviously, they didn’t have phones.
But the point is that they didn’t do any of that.
They sat absolutely still.
And the narrator of the Hadith, he says that they sat so still
that birds could perch on their heads and the bird wouldn’t fly away
because the perch moved.
So they sat so completely still.
And the third thing which is mentioned about them
is their attitude of complete and total respect.
They spoke almost.
They spoke in whispers.
They definitely never chattered between themselves.
So there was no cross chatter.
There was no people talking to each other and so on and disturbing the halakha,
disturbing the meeting.
They sat with their eyes glued to the blessed face of Rasul .
Once again, as I said, this is not about the individual.
This is about what he represents.
So if you say, well, you know what, my teacher, my Imam, he’s not the Rasul.
Of course, he’s not the Rasul.
But he is somebody who is sitting today in the position of the Rasul.
If Rasul had come into the Masjid, he would not be sitting where you sit.
He would be sitting where the Imam sits.
So keep that in mind.
I was absolutely ashamed to say it gives me a total sense of disgust.
When I’m in this Masjid, when I am delivering the Khutbah,
I have big adults, young men who can probably deadlift 200 pounds.
Who in their adolescence saw me sitting in the front of the Cubby
right in front of me so cold!”
Now I wasrica amazed me.
it is ok.
at the most.
There’s no at least.
If you’re coming to the masjid,
you’re not doing a favor to Allah.
You’re coming to the masjid for yourself.
So come to the masjid in a state
where you fulfill the rights of the masjid.
Allah SWT said,
قُذُوا زِينَةَكُمْ
Go with your zina.
Go in a state dressed in clothes
which are respectable,
which you can be seen in public with.
Don’t walk into the masjid in your pajamas.
Sit in a respectful attitude
because you are in the house of Allah.
You are in the presence of malaika,
presence of angels.
You’re listening to the most beautiful kitab.
إِنَّ أَزْدَقُ الْحَدِيسِ كِتَابُ اللَّهِ
إِنَّ أَزْدَقَ الْحَدِيسِ كِتَابُ اللَّهِ
The most truthful speech is the book of Allah.
And you’re listening to that.
You’re listening to the
وَخَيْرُ الْحَدِي
حَدِي مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ سَلَّمٍ
The best of hidayah,
the best of guidance
is the guidance of Rasulullah s.a.w.
You’re listening to that.
Let that be shown in your demeanor.
Let that be shown in your manners.
My brothers and sisters,
really seriously,
without adab,
without respect,
without manners,
believe me,
take my word for it,
write it down.
You will never ever benefit
from the knowledge of Islam.
It doesn’t matter how much you learn.
It doesn’t matter if you’re,
it doesn’t matter if you memorize
all the books of hadith.
If you don’t have adab,
it will not help you.
وَسَلَّمُ اللَّهُ عَلَى نَبِي الْكَرِيمِ
وَعَلَىٰ لِهِ وَسَبِّهِ
بِرَحْمَةِكَ وَرَحْمَةِهِ
