And then I realized what he was saying because I recalled that one day, sometime before that, I was in the post office and I saw an old woman who came there. It was Christmas time so she had these packets which were not very well wrapped. And she was using a walker. She had these packets in a plastic bag and her hands were completely, the knuckles were frozen and her hands were open and extended. She literally could not hold. It’s a very difficult, great difficulty. She was able to hold the walker and I helped her to repack and I helped her to post those packages, which were gifts for her children and she was living in an old people’s home. May Allah have mercy on people. Anyway, so I was thinking to myself that these knuckles, how many times we hold things, we pick up things, we leave things and so on, how many times do we thank Allah for the fact that we don’t have arthritis, it’s not in the knuckles even if you have it, and it doesn’t interfere with picking up things, with eating, with drinking. Just imagine the amount of pain and suffering that people have of arthritis and knuckles that they feel with simple, normal, everyday uses, like eating and drinking, using utensils, using cutlery, cooking, you name it. But you don’t realize that while it is there. You think of it only when it’s gone. Same thing with knees. Knees that don’t pain. Same thing with back, same thing with overall health, eyes, ears. How many people thank Allah for being able to see long and short distance without glasses? And then how many of us thank Allah for glasses? Alhamdulillah, there are glasses. What if there were no glasses? Then you would go through life looking at everything like a blur, or maybe not seeing it at all. So I want to thank Allah while we still have that. So He’s saying Allahumma, Inni awdhwika min zawalin nyamatiq. Allah, we thank you. Allah, we thank you for, not thank you, I seek refuge. Inni awdhwika, I seek your protection from the declining of your favours. And then, wadahawli afiyatik, from the passing of safety. Imagine we live in, alhamdulillah, here and in other places where we are living in safety. We’re living in places where we are safe, where we don’t have to worry about our life. You don’t have to worry about our health and you’ve got good public services. And you go home, people are not worrying, will this person come home tonight or not? My husband has gone, my father has gone, my child has gone to school or to work or something. Will they come back home or not? There are countries where wealthy people, I’m not even talking about poor people, I’m saying wealthy people, they literally ask this question every single day in the morning when they go out, will I see my near and dear one back home tonight in one piece? There are countries where people are living like this. They’re living lives of great insecurity. They may have got used to that. You may not see them, obviously they don’t spend their time crying about it. But at the same time, they are living lives of great insecurity. And alhamdulillah, we are not among them. Allah has kept us in a place where we are safe. We need to thank Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. So, the Holy Prophet Muhammad is teaching us this. The whole I ask you, your protection. Wadahawli afiyatik, from the passing of safety. Wa fuja’ati nikmatik, suddenness of your punishment. Allah give us time to make istafah and tawwah. Don’t catch us in a state where we are sinning. First of all, save us from sin itself. And secondly, don’t catch us in a state where we are sinning. Because the Holy Prophet Muhammad said, you will be resurrected in the same state. How shameful that will be, how humiliating that will be. We ask Allah to save us from that. And all that which displeases you. Right? Wajami’i sakhatik. All that will displease you. I remind myself and you that the greatest of mas’aib, the greatest of calamities is the displeasure of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. Right? The greatest of displeasure. We have to see this. Displeasing Allah as a great calamity. So think about this. We thank Allah for eyes, for ears, for tongue, for health, for property, children, and such countless blessings that we owe gratitude to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala for. In the prayer, the sited in this hadith, one entreats and begs Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala not to deprive us of any blessings that are given to us. Afya means to be in the state of displeasure. We say shaitan tells us, oh, you’re losing this money. And when you give this zakat, alhamdulillah, Allah gives baraka in our lives. Allah gives protection to us for protection. Allah protects us and protects our wealth. Right? The whole issue of attitude. How do you look at life? This is what makes us… This is what gives power to what we do. To ask Allah SWT to help us to do that which pleases Him and to save us from the biggest calamity which is to displease Him. And peace be upon the Prophet, upon his family and upon his companions.
