Don’t nullify your Ibaadah

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. And peace and blessings be upon the honour of the prophets and messengers.
Muhammad and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and upon his family and companions, are very much in peace.
My brothers and sisters, I want to speak about some very important matters today, so please sit and listen.
And these matters have to do with a very important aspect, which is the way shaitan deceives the good people.
Shaitan deceives people in different ways. He does not deceive everyone in the same way.
And like I told you the other time, the way you differentiate between the wasafis of shaitan and the wasafis of your own nafs
is that you are not the same.
The nafs is addicted to some particular thing. Right? Some specific thing.
There is somebody who will watch pornography. For somebody else, he will never watch pornography. But he will do drugs. Right?
Somebody will smoke cigarettes. But he will not drink alcohol. Somebody will drink alcohol, won’t smoke cigarettes and so on.
So, the nafs is addicted to some particular thing.
But shaitan is not like that. Shaitan does not care what you do as long as it is disobeying Allah.
So, it doesn’t matter what. No matter what it is. As long as it is disobedience of Allah, shaitan is happy.
So, shaitan deceives different people in different ways.
So, some people he will take them to haram. But other people, may Allah bless all of you, like you, who are, alhamdulillah,
people who have knowledge of Islam, people who are connected to the masajid, you come for Jummah, you come for Salah,
you read Quran and so on and so forth. Shaitan will not tell you, you know, go smoke some marijuana or have a drink somewhere
because he knows you are not going to do that. Right? So, there is no sense in trying to tempt you with that. He cannot tempt you.
So, what he does with you is something else.
He does, what he does with you is, and this is again the typical game of shaitan.
If he cannot prevent you from doing something which is good, then he will make you do the good thing in a way which reduces or cancels the benefit of that.
So, for example, shaitan will, shaitan knows, he cannot prevent you from going for Jummah.
You will go for Jummah. As long as you are alive, you will go for Jummah.
You make the effort, you take the time off and you will go for Jummah. Shaitan knows he cannot stop you.
So, what does he do? He makes you do something when you come for Jummah which makes your Jummah invalid, cancels.
So, you come for Jummah and you have this feeling, mashaAllah, alhamdulillah, I went for Jummah and may Allah bless you, you went for Jummah, so on.
But when you look in your aamal, when you meet Allah , there is no Jummah.
Say, Ya Allah, what happened?
I went for Jummah.
Ya.
You went for Jummah.
But then what happened?
You went for Jummah and then you met your, then you saw your friend sitting there.
So, you went and said, Salaam Alaikum, how are you?
He said, Walaikum Assalam, how are you?
Both your Jummahs become zero.
Khalas.
So, shaitan is very happy.
You come, sit here, do your Jummah, no problem.
Right?
Say, Salaam Alaikum, Walaikum Assalam.
You come and sit for the khatrah, then you walk away because somebody, your mother called or father called or somebody called.
So, I thought, let me give you the dalail for this.
The majority of scholars are of the opinion that it is obligatory to be silent during the khutbah.
And one is not allowed to speak during the khutbah, not even if it is to order somebody to do good or stop some evil.
And this applies.
This rule applies whether or not the person is sitting in the mosque and actually hear the khutbah.
See the beauty of this.
Suppose you are sitting in a big mosque.
Khutbah is going on, the mic fails.
You cannot hear the khutbah.
But you are, you know khutbah is going on and you are in the Jummah, you are in the masjid.
And you find somebody is playing with his phone.
Somebody is on his phone.
Now, he is doing something wrong.
If you tell the person, don’t play with your phone, your Jummah is gone.
Somebody comes and says, Salaam Alaikum.
If you say, Walaikum Assalam, your Jummah is gone.
That fellow’s Jummah is gone anyway.
He says, Salaam Alaikum.
But your Jummah also is gone if you say, Walaikum Assalam.
Although, to reply to Salaam otherwise is wajib.
If your brother says to you, Salaam Alaikum, you must say, Walaikum Assalam.
Unless it’s a group of people and one says, this is something wrong.
It’s insufficient.
But if somebody is directly addressing you and says, Salaam Alaikum, you must say, Walaikum Assalam.
But in Jummah, if you say that, Jummah is gone.
Sir, I heard that, does it apply to all forms of communication like texting and…
Everything, JazakAllah Khair. Good question.
Does it apply to all forms of communication?
Yes, like texting, like whatever, WhatsApp, Facebook, every single form of communication.
JazakAllah Khair, very good question.
Ibn Abbas reports that Rasulullah said, whoever speaks in Jummah while the Imam is delivering the Khutbah is like a donkey.
Kal-Hibar.
Yahmeelu Asfara.
Who is carrying books.
Meaning that he has the load of something good on his back, but that does not do him any good because he’s not reading the books.
He can’t read the books.
It’s just a load for him.
Right?
Somebody who speaks in Jummah while the Imam is delivering the Khutbah is like a donkey who is carrying books.
And for those who tell him to be quiet, Jummah is invalid.
There is no reward for the Jummah.
What must you do?
Keep your mouth shut.
Focus on the Imam.
And this is narrated by…
Musnad Ibn Ahmad and Ibn Abi Shaiba and Tawarani and so on.
And Ibn al-Hajar al-Asqalani in Bulugh al-Maram, he said this is a Sahih Hadith and there is no fault in the chain of narration.
Abdullah ibn Amr reports that Rasulullah said, there are three types of people who attend Jummah.
One, a man who is present but speaks during the Khutbah.
And that is his portion of the prayer.
Two, a man who is present and makes Dua.
In his case, Allah may give him what he asks.
If he wishes or he may not give him what he asks.
Three, a person who is present and is silent and does not step over the necks of the Muslims nor harm anyone.
For whom?
For him, there is expiation, there is forgiveness from that Jummah until the next Jummah plus an additional three days.
Because Allah said,
He that does good shall have ten times as much to his credit.
Man jaa abir hasanati falahu ash shuru amthaliha.
So seven days plus another three days.
And this is in Musnad Imam Ahmad and in Abi Dawud.
So three kinds of people.
Two of them, there is no reward.
One person who is silent, who is listening to the Khutbah.
For that person, there is reward for his attendance.
Plus there is forgiveness between this Jummah and the next Jummah and for three days.
In addition to that.
Abu Huraira reported that Rasool Allah said,
If during the Jummah while the Imam is delivering the Khutbah,
you tell your companion to be quiet, then your Jummah is gone.
You have spoken needlessly and Jummah is gone.
And this is in Ibn al-Masih.
Abu Darda al-Azhar ibn al-Adhiyallahu says,
Rasool Allah was on the Mimbar and was addressing the people and he recited an ayah.
And next to me was Ubay bin Ka’b and I asked him,
When was that ayah revealed?
He refused to talk to me until Nabi came down from the Mimbar.
And then he said to me,
You have nothing from your Jummah except useless talk.
Who is saying this to?
Abu Darda al-Azhar ibn al-Adhiyallahu.
He was one of the greatest of the Sahaba.
Umm Darda, his wife, was one of the first Muhaddithat,
one of the first scholars of Hadith.
She used to give Dars in Masjid al-Nabawi al-Sharif.
She would sit on the Mimbar and give Dars.
And the men would sit in front of her and the women would sit behind them.
And when Malik bin Marwan, who was the Khalifa at that time,
sometimes he was in Madinah,
at the time of Salah,
he would lead Salah and then she would go behind and she would pray.
And her husband was one of the few, very few Sahaba,
who was given by Nabi the permission to give Fatwa while in his,
in his old lifetime.
This is what he’s saying to him.
Because he asked Ubaib bin Ka’b al-Adhiyallahu,
When was this ayah revealed?
And these are the people who were witness to the revelation.
He said, When was the ayah revealed?
Nabi saw that.
Ubaib bin Ka’b kept quiet, didn’t say anything.
Didn’t reply, didn’t respond at all.
When he came from the Mimbar,
he said, Your Jummah is invalid.
Because of useless talk.
Yes.
What if during the Jummah,
there is like a technology problem,
let’s say the mic doesn’t work,
and you are the only person that is able to fix it.
Good question.
What in Jummah, if there is a technology problem,
for example, if something happens,
some emergency, something happens,
and you are the go-to person for that,
then for you, InshaAllah, there is permission to go and fix that.
And for you, the Jummah is good, InshaAllah.
Right?
Yes.
During a Khutbah, Imam can point out somebody,
like, please go and do this one, so he…
Yeah, Imam good.
The Imam has the option to speak to somebody and say something.
I am talking about people, what they do among themselves,
which we see every single Jummah in this masjid, believe me.
Right?
So I am giving you all the dalai,
let me see what happens in the next Jummah.
Then, Ahmad and Imam Shafi’i are reported to have made a distinction
concerning the ruling between one who can hear the speech
and one who cannot hear the speech,
saying that speaking is forbidden for the one who can hear
and not for the other one,
but it’s preferred also for the other one to be silent.
Now, At-Tirwidi records that Imam Ahmad said,
Imam Ahmad and Ishaq made an exception for replying to a salutation
and responding to a sneeze while the Imam is delivering the Khutbah.
According to Shafi’i, if a person sneezes during the Khutbah
and somebody says,
Ya Rahmakallah,
he says, I wish I could have accommodated that meaning,
that I wish I could have said that is okay, but that is not okay.
So the person is saying, Alhamdulillah, it’s fine.
But if you say, Ya Rahmakallah, your Jummah is gone.
Like in Salah, for example, in Salah, if you sneeze, you can say Alhamdulillah.
But somebody is standing next to you, he says, Ya Rahmakallah, Salah is gone.
Right? Yes.
And once the Imam comes up, says, Salam Alaikum,
why, till the prayer is done or?
Yeah, yeah, exactly. Yeah.
JazakAllah, good question.
So when does this all start?
This starts from the time the Imam gets on the Mimbar and says, Salam Alaikum.
From the time till the prayer is over, Salam Alaikum, Salam Alaikum,
this whole rule applies of being completely silent,
not talking to anybody, paying attention to the Imam,
sitting in a position of respect, of adab.
Not sitting, holding up the wall and your legs stuck out and,
you know, all this kind of nonsense you see in this country,
Allah, may Allah have mercy on us.
It is highly disrespectful and it is disrespectful to the house of Allah,
it is disrespectful to the Mimbar of Rasulullah
to do that. It’s not a question of the Imam.
The Imam is a representative of the Rasul .
Please understand this.
It’s not the individual there.
The person standing on the Mimbar, he is the representative of the Rasul.
He is as if the Rasul is sitting here in front of you.
And if you are sitting in a position which shows disrespect,
you are showing disrespect to the Prophet .
Please understand this very clearly. Yes.
I’ve seen that you ask sometimes somebody is waving for somebody like that in the crucible.
Haram. Haram.
Absolutely waving, holding on to your heart because it will jump out of the chest
because of your friend. Sorry. All of this.
No gestures, no gestures, no talking.
Look at the Imam, sit in a position of, respectfully,
if you can sit in the position of Tashawud, very good.
Otherwise sit with your, like Sheikh is sitting there,
with your legs this way, no problem.
If you can’t bend your knees, sit on a chair, no problem.
But don’t sit with your legs pointed at the face of the Imam. Sorry.
That is not respectful. Right?
Suppose I’m sitting like this. You like that?
So why should I like it?
No really, I mean, what kind of stuff is that?
So sit and we know all this. I mean, you know what beats me?
I can understand if I’m talking to a whole bunch of reverts,
American reverts born and brought up in this country, they don’t know anything else.
Every single one of you comes from countries where you would not even dream of doing that.
Forget about doing it. Even in your dream you won’t do it.
But when you come to America, God knows what happens.
Strange, right? Yes.
So after the adhaad, normally there’s a dua we say.
In Jummah, if the adhaad is called and the Imam straight away starts his lecture,
if you make dua, does that count?
Dua is dua. And dua in the sense of, again a good question,
dua in the sense of you’re not going to say it loudly.
You’re saying dua for the adhaad in your heart or silently.
Maafi boshira, no problem.
When he says istaghfar, if you do istaghfar.
You must do istaghfar. That’s why he’s saying istaghfar.
If you say first of all, who, you mean what? He’s just telling you. Make istaghfar.
Make dua then and he continues but you’re in the middle of dua.
No problem. Then you can stop your dua and you can, you know, don’t make such a long dua.
Yeah. So make, make, you know, reasonable dua.
Now another, from that, another question.
Once the Imam comes on the mimbar and says,
Salaam Alaikum, even doing zikr is not permitted.
Reading Quran is not permitted.
Forget about looking at your phone and texting us.
Even reading Quran, if you were reading Quran until then,
you should have been. It would have been a good thing if you come early,
which you should do. Come early for Jummah,
pray to Urakaat, Tahithul Masjid, sit down and read Quran or make zikr.
This is how, this is what we must do.
But if you are doing that also, the minute you come,
the Imam comes on the mimbar and says, Salaam Alaikum,
you shut the Mus’haf, put it away.
If you are doing zikr, put away your, your tasbih and mazbah
and pay attention to the Imam.
Once the Imam is on the mimbar, there is only one action,
which is Jais and Halal.
And that is to pay complete attention to the Imam and listen to the Imam.
Nothing else. Anything else you do is not Jais.
It is Halal. It is prohibited. Yes, Jawahar.
So, whenever I come to Juraan prayer, I will see people coming in.
I saw they come in during the Washa.
Khutbah, like people start praying to Urakaat.
Yeah, this is possible. That’s not so.
That’s not, that’s Tahithul Masjid.
Even if the Khutbah is going on, you pray, you can pray to Urakaat, Tahithul Masjid.
There is no problem with that, InshaAllah.
But best thing is come early enough to pray Tahithul Masjid
and then you listen to the Khutbah. Right?
So, praying the Tahithul Masjid before, while the Khutbah is going on,
this is an exceptional case. Yes, you can do that.
Because Tahithul Masjid is a very important Salah which must not be missed
and there is a specific Hadith on this respect,
where a man came, Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam was doing the Khutbah.
He was going to sit down. He said, Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said to him,
pray to Urakaat and that’s it.
So, we have the Dalil to say what you are saying.
All right, good. So, Alhamdulillah, as far as Jummah is concerned.
Now, second thing is, the rest of the things that we do
in terms of the Salah and so forth.
One of the things that I strongly recommend to,
especially to the parents, sit with your children
and teach them the Masail of Taharah. Right?
We have had this issue in this Masjid.
We have also had this issue in Baitul Salam.
I was speaking to Sheikh Umar.
17, 18 year old boys, they come, they do not know anything about Ghosl.
Right? His parents don’t know about Ghosl.
Somebody who has had five children does not know about Ghosl.
Without Taharah, you are stuck.
Without the Salah, it is not valid. Without Taharah, nothing is valid.
So, please, learn the Masail.
If you don’t know the Masail, come and ask.
Inshallah, Sheikh is here, I am here, we will teach you.
It takes you, I think maybe, to learn the Masail of Ghosl takes you,
maybe what, two minutes or three minutes.
Right? If you are really dumb, five minutes.
You don’t have five minutes and that five minutes,
that five minutes is what is,
nullifying all your Ibadah.
Remember when I began this, I said,
Shaytan does this, Shaytan will take away the goodness of your Ibadah
while you are sitting there.
He cannot stop you from coming.
So, when he lets you come and then he makes you do something which nullifies everything.
Right? So, please, learn the Iqamah.
How many times I have had people who regularly are praying five times a day in the Masjid.
May Allah bless you. And you say,
Akim Ustaz, I give the Iqamah.
You give the Iqamah wrong.
What is so complicated?
What is so complicated?
It’s a simple thing.
Learn that.
Give the Iqamah correctly.
Imamat.
It is among the wajibat of the Imam to have,
for example, they asked the Mishra, who should be the Imam?
He said, the one who knows the Quran the most.
Now, you don’t have to take a test to find out, but you know,
whoever you know in the thing, who knows the number one.
So, if there is a Hafiz, it’s his right to lead Salah.
For some reason, he does not want to lead.
He tells somebody else, it’s okay.
But while he is here, while the Hafiz is present for someone else to lead Salah,
this is something which is, you know, very highly undesirable.
So, one who knows the most Salah.
And then somebody who is on the Sunnah visibly.
What is the, what are the Salah?
What is the, what are the signs of the Sunnah for the man?
Beard.
To shave the beard comes in the actions which are haram
because it is tantamount to changing the khalq of Allah,
to changing the creation of Allah.
Shaving the beard for the men, tattooing, right?
Botox.
For decreasing the size of the breasts or the buttocks for the women.
Plucking eyebrows.
To shave the eyebrows.
Some of them shave it completely and they draw it with a pen.
Right?
Hair extensions.
They do that.
Wigs.
All of this is haram, haram and haram.
Because it amounts to the change of the khalq of Allah.
Subhanahu wa ta’ala.
Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala created you with Waqar.
He created you with a beard like He created a lion with a mane.
Take the mane off.
That lion looks like a monkey.
Why do you do that?
Why do you shave your beard?
You afraid of something?
Remember, when you go in the Qabah, the Malik will come.
The Malika will come.
And what are they going to ask you?
Man Rabbuk?
Ma Dinuk?
And Ban Nabiuk? Right?
Or they’ll ask you, what do you say about the man who was sent among you?
And you will say, I am his follower.
And they look at your face and say, aha!
Really?
You are his follower?
And what happened to your beard?
How come you are the follower of the Nabi and the first thing you do, imagine how despicable,
how horrible it is.
The very first thing you do as soon as you open your eyes in the morning is you take
the Sunnah of the Nabi away from your face.
And then you want to make Mawlid and you want to sing Nasheed for Miladun Nabi.
And please.
I don’t have a barber shop.
I’m not trying to promote that.
Right?
So I’m saying, keep your beard.
I’m saying after that come to my barber shop.
No.
This is the Sunnah of the Nabi .
This is our Waqar.
This is our Nishan.
This is who we are.
We show our face by that.
All of these things.
So the person who is leading Salah must have a beard.
If he does not have a beard, he is not fit to lead Salah.
With all these things.
With all the four Aima, the person who shaves his beard is considered to be a Fasiq and
Fajr.
Imam Abu Hanifa said, do not accept his witness.
Because if he takes the Sunnah of the Nabi from his face, we don’t trust him anymore.
So if somebody leading Salah does not have a beard, his leading of Salah is invalid.
I don’t care how beautifully he said.
The Quran makes no difference.
The leading Salah is invalid.
When you are leading Salah, cover your head.
With a turban, with a hat, with whatever, a cap.
This is from the Waqar of the Imam.
When you are making Khutbah of Jummah, cover your head.
People doing Khutbah of Jummah, no beard, no head covering.
Who puts them there?
Please understand.
The boards of the masajid, the administrator of the masajid, it is your responsibility.
You put somebody on the mimbar, or you put somebody in the mihrab who does not follow
this, you will answer to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.
Because it’s your responsibility.
Then the libas, the clothing.
Hajiib.
The guy praying next to you, he goes and look, your wudu is gone.
Laa walakhu wa ta’ala.
Laa walakhu wa ta’ala.
The wudu doesn’t go, but my point is that he goes and look.
See, the satar of the man is from the navel, above the navel to his knees.
Absolute minimum satar.
If this piece gets exposed during the Salah, your Salah is invalid.
So now you are wearing the hipster’s pants.
You don’t know if the pants are going to fall off or they are going to stay there.
And you are wearing a short t-shirt.
When you go into Ruku, may Allah have mercy, everything is visible.
Now why are you showing it?
Everybody’s got the same thing.
Your Salah is gone.
Now, remember when I began, I began this by what?
By saying this is what shaitan will do to you.
You are coming five times a day for Salah, and in your record there is not even one Salah.
Because every Salah in the first Ruku, your Salah is gone.
Now how terrible is that?
I mean, if you are not coming for Salah, okay, you are not doing it.
But you are coming for Salah.
May Allah bless you.
May Allah have mercy on you.
May Allah protect you.
May Allah love you.
May Allah enter you into His special kingdom, into His firdaws.
May Allah make you among His awliya.
I can do any dua for you, but you come for Salah, and you bend down, and your, you know,
sit upon is visible.
Then you got a problem.
You got a problem.
Wear clothing which is visible.
Wear clothing which is visible.
Wear clothing which is appropriate, which is, you don’t have to wear a top, but wear
clothing which completely covers and which will not uncover when you go in Salah.
Also, don’t wear clothing with all kinds of drawings and with, you know, shaitani symbols
on it and all kinds of names, and big, big logos and prints on the back, especially in
another language.
In the Hanafi Madhab, I don’t know about the Malikis, but the Hanafi Madhab, if you read
anything or say anything other than the Arabic language in Salah, your Salah is gone.
So now you have some slogan on the back of the, free Palestine or something, on the
back of your, or your, of your t-shirt, and you are standing in Salah, the guy behind
you, he stands up, he sees free Palestine, his Salah is gone.
Poor guy, what did you do, man?
I mean, when you go to, Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala said,
قُدُوا زِينَتُكُمْ فِي كُلِّ مَشَارِي
Allah said, take, go to the masjid with Waqar, with zina, with zina.
With zina.
With beauty.
Wear appropriate clothing.
Wear plain clothing.
Don’t wear anything with writing on it and pictures on it and all of that stuff on it.
Make sure you do that.
Right?
And especially children.
Don’t buy stuff like that for your children.
I mean, the kids are not buying the stuff, you’re buying the stuff for them.
And if the child wants it, explain to him.
He said, no, this is not how we dress.
We are Muslim.
We don’t do these things.
We don’t dress like this.
You’re going to the masjid.
You’re going to the house of Allah.
Go respectfully in that way.
Right?
So all of these things are for practice.
Each of them may look like a small thing.
It’s not a small thing.
It’s a very major thing because this thing completely nullifies your ibadah.
You take all the time and trouble, you come here and then you do something and your ibadah has gone to zero.
Makes really no sense.
So I request you also, whatever I’ve told you, it gets recorded, it comes on things,
share it with all the people.
Speak to your family, speak to your friends and tell them before you enter.
Don’t say that in the Juma.
Then that verifies the…
Before you go inside, don’t talk.
Don’t say, Salam.
And if somebody says to you, just ignore.
Keep quiet.
Look ahead.
Say nothing.
Right?
We ask Allah to protect us and protect our a’mal and to help us to do that which pleases Him.
We ask Allah to protect us from shaytan and from shaytan nullifying and cancelling out our ibadah.
We ask Allah to keep us especially in His care to be pleased with us and never to be displeased.
And may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the noble Prophet and upon his family and his companions.
By the mercy of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
And all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
