What is Bida’a

Auto-generated transcript:

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, and peace and blessings be upon the honour of His prophets and messengers.
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and upon his family and his companions.
Peace be upon him, and upon his family and his companions.
And then, my brothers and sisters, we hear this Hadith every Friday,
where the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, is reported to have said,
Indeed, the most truthful Hadith is the Book of Allah, and the best of the Hadith is the Hadith of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and upon his family and his companions.
The evil of matters is their events,
and every event is a misguidance, and every misguidance is a misguidance, and every misguidance is a misguidance in the Fire.
We hear this Hadith in every Friday,
where the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, has stated that the best speech is the speech, is the Book of Allah,
and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and upon his family and his companions.
And then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, has said,
Every new thing that is introduced into Islam is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire, in the Hellfire.
So what is Bida? Because many times people say many things, and recently people ask me about, normally nowadays people say Jummah Mubarak.
I change my mind.
I change my mind.
I change my mind.
I think the South Africans started this, if I’m not mistaken, Jummah Mubarak.
So somebody said, well, Jummah Mubarak is Bida.
And so on other things, celebrating a birthday, child’s birthday, this is Bida, and so forth.
So what is Bida? It’s very important to understand this because it’s a matter of Aqeedah.
What is Bida?
There are two fundamental principles of Islam.
The first fundamental principle of Islam is that this Deen is complete.
That Allah, Subhanahu wa ta’ala, completed this Deen.
And the Dhalil for that, the evidence for that is the Kitab of Allah.
Allah, Subhanahu wa ta’ala, said,
Al-Yawma aqmaltu lakum Deenam wa a’tmamtu alaykum ni’mati wa radeetu lakumul Islamadeena.
Allah, Subhanahu wa ta’ala, said, which means today,
I have completed my blessing on you.
Al-Yawma aqmaltu lakum Deenakum.
I have completed your Deen for you and completed my blessing on you.
Wa a’tmamtu alaykum ni’mati.
The ni’ma is tamam, complete.
Wa a’laykum As-Salaam.
Wa radeetu lakumul Islamadeena.
And I am pleased for you to have Islam as your Deen, as your way of life.
So this is the word of Allah, that this Deen is complete.
There is nothing missing in this Deen.
Then we have the second fundamental principle,
which is in the Khutbatul Wada’ of Rasulullah
in his Hajjatul Wada’ in his Khutbah.
The Prophet said to the people, he said,
Have I completed and conveyed to you completely,
whatever was revealed to me?
And they said, Ya Rasulullah, yes, you have completed.
And the Prophet raised his finger towards the sky,
he looked up and he said, O Allah, you are the witness.
So we have the Kitab of Allah and the Qawl al-Kareem wa Sharif
of Rasulullah to say that this Deen is complete.
Nothing is missing.
In this context, you must see the Hadith.
Therefore Rasulullah is saying that if somebody is introducing something into the Deen,
then this is misguidance.
Balala wa kulla dhalalateen finnaar
All of these dhalala will be in the fire.
So what is the meaning of introducing into the Deen?
The word Bida’
comes from the word Bada’ which is to start something.
And the thing which is started is the Bida’.
For example, the Prophet said, Bada’ al-Islami ghareeban
Islam started as something strange.
Wasayahudu kama Bada’
And it will return to how it was when it was started.
And then he said, Fatuba lil ghoraba
He said, give the glad tidings of Tuba, which is a tree in Jannah,
to the people who the world will call the Haraib, the strange people.
So who are the strange people?
The strange people are the people who stand for justice, for compassion,
for honesty, integrity, decency, halal,
and who stand against the opposite of all this.
People will say, what is this? Strange people.
Everybody is eating interest.
Everybody is dealing in interest.
You say, I will not deal in interest.
Everybody is buying and selling haraab.
You say, I will not do it.
Everybody is doing all kinds of haraab in relationship.
You say, no, no, no, I will get married.
I will not do this haraab relationship.
You are strange.
This culture, you are against the culture.
Alhamdulillah.
Alhamdulillah.
If that, if people are saying, are calling you strange for this reason,
then InshaAllah, the Bashar of Rasulullah is for you.
So Bida’ is something which is strange.
Bida’ is something which is introduced into the Deen.
Now, what is Deen?
Deen is something where an action is done for the pleasure of Allah
with expectation of reward from Allah .
Right?
It is done for the sake of Allah,
and it is done with the expectation of reward from Allah .
This is Deen.
I buy a car, you say, Bida’ because Nabi never had a car.
That’s nonsense.
You don’t buy the car for the Deen.
Car is a car.
It’s a convenience.
Right?
I buy a watch.
I do something.
I wear clothes, for example.
No, no, no, these are, Nabi never wore this kind of clothes.
This is not part of Deen.
This is part of convenience.
This is life.
Sahoolah.
Deen is something you do for the sake of Islam,
expecting rewards from Allah.
For example, you say, well, I love the Rasool very much.
So on the 12th of Rabiul Awal,
every year, we will have a celebration.
We call this celebration, Milad, Mawlood, Miladun Nabi,
call it whatever name you want.
And in this celebration, we will make this special food,
and we will have this,
in India, somebody started doing actually two rakats of Salatul Eid.
Really?
Can you believe it?
The man is doing two rakats of Salatul Eid on Miladun Nabi,
this Eid.
Now you might say, well, you know, after all, what is wrong with that?
The man loves the Nabi .
So what is wrong?
Should we not celebrate?
Should we be happy or sad?
The Nabi was born.
This is the way.
They will make this argument for you.
What is the answer?
The answer is not a question of happy or sad.
The answer is how do you express this happiness?
In which way?
You are experiencing this happiness by creating a form of Ibadah,
a form of act of worship.
Why are you having this celebration on the 12th of Rabiul Awal?
Because you think this will please Allah.
You think this is going to give me Sawaab.
So you’re doing it.
Sawaab, I say, let us do it on the 1st of January.
No, no, no, no, 12th of Rabiul Awal.
Why?
Are you not happy on the 1st of January the Nabi was born?
You’re happy only on 12th?
So you’re making an action of Ibadah.
This is a Bida’ah.
Because you are creating something in the Deen.
Now as you go back into the Sir, I say,
did Rasulullah ever celebrate his birthday on the 12th or the 11th or the 10th
or the 9th or the 5th or the 6th?
On any day did he say, today is my birthday, celebrate it.
No, he said, I was born on a Monday and I fast on Monday
because I would like to fast on the day in which I was born.
That is it.
So if you want to celebrate the birthday of Rasulullah,
then for the rest of your life, fast every Monday of your life.
Alhamdulillah.
This is sincerity.
This is khas.
Not on one 12th of Rabiul Awal which you dream up.
Hey, he never did it.
Did the Khulafa Rashidah, did they do this?
Did the Sahaba do it?
No one.
All the way until the Fatimid Khulafa in Egypt,
which was the Fatimid, was the Shia dynasty in Egypt.
Later on, Salahuddin.
Salahuddin became the prime minister, the wazir,
and then he took over that and so on and so on.
That’s a long history.
But in that Fatimid dynasty, they started the first of these celebrations.
And it was a whole week.
It was the birthday of Rasulullah .
Then the birthday of, then the celebrations.
One was Rasulullah , then Sayyidina Ali ,
Sayyidina Fatima , Sayyidina Hasan ,
Sayyidina Hasan , Sayyidina Hussain .
And then the Fatimid Khalifa .
All of these.
There is historical record of how much food was given,
what food was given, how many celebrations.
All of this is recorded.
In almost, that is why I forget exactly,
I think it was about 700, so that’s about 300 or 350 years after Rasulullah passed away.
You start this thing, new thing.
Now, what is the problem with that?
The problem with Bida is, I’m giving you this only as an example.
There are many such things that happen.
All of them are wrong.
The problem with Bida is, the person who is starting something in the Deen,
by his or her action, they are saying that the Deen was not complete,
and I am completing it now.
That Rasulullah did not convey the full message.
I am conveying the missing piece now.
So when you are introducing a Bida, it is Shirk and it is Kufr, together.
Because you are denying the Ayat of the Quran,
and you are denying this Qawla of Rasulullah ,
and you are introducing something from your own invention.
So a Bida is a very, very, very bad thing.
Having said that, don’t say that everything is Bida.
For example, if you say,
if Jawaharlal says, tell this dad, I want to celebrate my birthday,
I want to call a few friends and call them for lunch or dinner or something.
Is it Halal or Halak?
Can he do it?
Of course.
Why not?
No, it’s Bida. Why is it Bida?
Is he saying this is part of Islam?
Is he saying this is the Deen?
Is he saying that with this Allah will be pleased and therefore Allah will give me Sawaam and this is Ibadah?
No.
He is just saying, we’ll have some,
some nice food, call people, eat food,
Alhamdulillah,
do it.
No problem.
So don’t just take, for example,
this same Juma Mubarak.
Juma Mubarak is Bida.
How is it Bida?
Why is it Bida?
Supposing I tell you tomorrow,
Yawmul Ahad Mubarak.
I can’t say that? Is it haram?
Sunday Mubarak, why not?
People are, this is all, you know, like,
I call it algebra.
A equals B, B equals C, therefore A equals C.
Standard formula in algebra.
So we say,
Eid,
on Eid, on Yawmul Eid, we have two Eids.
Eidul Adha, Eidul Fitr.
On this Yawmul Eid, we say Eid Mubarak.
And we shall say that Juma is the Eidul Muslim, Eidul Momin.
Therefore, to fast only on Juma is not haram, but it’s, you know,
better not to do it.
So that’s Yawmul Eid.
So therefore, Juma Mubarak because Juma is Eidul Momin.
It’s the Eid for the Muslims.
So somebody’s logic.
I’m not saying we should say it.
I’m not saying we should not say it.
But I’m saying don’t make a statement to say it is Bida.
It is not Bida.
Because the one who’s saying Juma Mubarak is not saying
if you don’t do this, you are kafir.
If you don’t do this, this is haram.
If you don’t say Juma Mubarak, something is wrong with you.
No.
You say Juma Mubarak, you want to say, say, don’t say, don’t say, halas.
But if somebody insists, no, no, you have to say Juma Mubarak
because this is part of Islam, then there is a problem.
But nobody’s saying that.
You don’t want to say, don’t say.
Alhamdulillah, maafi boshkarat.
So please understand.
That’s why the importance of learning the Aqidah of the Muslims systematically.
It’s very important.
You know, Vizag, alhamdulillah, they said,
you cannot believe until you know what you believe.
You cannot have faith until you know what you have faith in.
You cannot say, I believe in Allah unless you know who Allah is.
And that is the reason why we study the Aqidah.
This is one small piece of Aqidah.
Because several people asked me the question.
I said, let me clarify this.
So this is the issue of Bida.
Bida is very, very bad, very serious.
But also we should understand what is Bida and what is not Bida.
It’s a regular practice, custom practice, alhamdulillah.
We ask Allah to help us to study our Deen systematically
and to practice it for the pleasure of Allah alone
and to help us and illuminate our lives with the Nur of Islam
and to keep us in the protection of Islam.
Alhamdulillah, Rabbil Alameen.
