Ask only Allahﷻ – The Emperor and the Bell

Auto-generated transcript:

Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim, alhamdulillahi rabbil ‘alameen, wa salatu wa salamu ala ash-hala fil anbiya wal mursaleen, Muhammadur Rasulullahi sallallahu alayhi wa ala alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam, taslimun kathirun kathirun.

Ama ba’d. Mere bhaiyon aur behnon, in tarjume mein hadith mein Ibn Abbas radi allahu anhu, unhone kaha ke ek din woh reedh raha tha Rasool Allah ﷺ ke paas. Toh woh Rasool Allah ﷺ ke paas the aur woh uske paas reh rahe the. And when Prophet said to him, Ya Ghulam, he said, O young man, I will teach you some words.

And then he said to him, Ihfazillah ya’fazuk. He said, Ihfaz basically means to take care, protect. But in the context of Allah, we don’t take care of Allah, we don’t protect Allah. It means be conscious of Allah. Be mindful of Allah, be conscious of Allah, and Allah will protect you.

And then he said, إِحْفَظِ اللَّهِ تَجِدْهُ تُجَاهَكَ. He said, be mindful of Allah. Again, be conscious of Allah and you will find Him before you.

And then he said, إِذَا سَأَلَتْ فَاسْأَلِ اللَّهِ. If you ask, ask only Allah. وَإِذَا اسْتَعَنَتْ. And if you ask for istianah for help, fasta’in billah, ask Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala only for help. Seek help, seek help only from Allah. And then he said that know this: that if the whole nation, if all of creation gathered to benefit you with what Allah has already written for you, and if they gathered together not one person, not a group of people but the whole of creation. If they gathered to harm you, they could only harm you with what Allah has already written against you. The pens have been lifted, and the pages have spread.

It’s a very beautiful hadith, and I remind myself and you that these are things that we need to memorize, and we need to remember from time to time, and our human beings and our children and others ko tadhkraiin ke ye tawheed ki asal hai. Ye Islam ki asal hai. Ibn Abbas apne bhai hai. Ibn Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib ke bhai hai jo uske bhai tha. Ibn Abbas apne bhai tha. Ibn Abbas Rasool Allah ﷺ ke sath Madinah mein zindagi karte the. Aur woh bohat saari hadith ki narrators hain. Woh ek shakhs hai jo kaha tha ke ek din main ne Rasool Allah ﷺ Tahajjud ki taraf jana diya. Soor karain, yeh uske baare mein bada bacha tha. Woh aisa hi 10 saal se 12 saal se tha. Woh kaha tha ke main ne Rasool Allah ﷺ jana diya. He didn’t say that Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam woke up and woke me up. He said I saw him wake up. And then he said so I ran to get water for Voodoo for him. He said when he woke up I brought the water, I poured the water for him. He made Voodoo and then he placed, he put his blessed hand on my chest and he made Dua and said O Allah give him the Faham of the Quran, give him the understanding of the Qur’an.

Ibn Abbas was literally the first, we can say, mufassir of the Qur’an, the first person to understand the Qur’an al-Karim and to explain the Qur’an al-Karim. From the Sahaba, he was considered to be among the best of the best, among the most learned of them, to the extent that Sayyidina Umar ibn al-Khattab used to… aur woh acha bhai tha jab pehle woh apne dunyaon mein raha tha ya rabta 20 ya kuch le? Toh kuch senior Sahaba jo majlis ke baare mein the, mu’minon ke baare mein ek sath unhone objection kiya aur unhone kaha ke Sayyidina Umar ibn al-Khattab Rasool Allah ﷺ kyun aap ne us bhai ko kya kya ke woh hamare bhaiyon se bara hain? Hum sunni log hain kyun aap iske majlis ko daawat dete hain? Toh Hazrat Umar radi allahu anhu ne inhein baat nahi kiya. Lekin iske baad main woh iske baare mein bhi daawat dete hain. Ibn Abbas. Aur phir woh in sab se sochte hain. Woh ne kaha ke Surah Al-Nasr, إِذَا جَاءَ نَصْرُ اللَّهِ وَالْفَتْح. Woh ne kaha ke aap is surah ka kya samajhte hain? Aap is surah kaise samajhte hain? Toh hum sab ne kaha ke yeh surah hai, hum yeh samajhte hain. Allah ta’ala ne kaha ke jab Allah ki Nasr aata hai, jab Allah ki madad aata hai toh aap ko Islam mein log jhum karayenge, bara groups mein, kisi ek nahi samajhta, joher, joher. The prediction that Rasulullah ﷺ was going to pass away. The surah was the prediction that the work of Risalat, the work of Rasulullah ﷺ is over and Allah ﷻ is going to call him. Sayyidina Muhammad said, this is why I invite him to these majazis because he has got an understanding of the Qur’an that we don’t have, thanks to the dua of Rasulullah.

Now, this is the person narrating this hadith, and he is saying that the Prophet said to him, protect this tawheed of Allah that you have. Be mindful of Allah, be conscious of Allah, and Allah will protect you. The purpose of reading a hadith is not only just to read for the barakah, barakah is there anyway, but to reflect on it and think about it. And say, for example, that we want the protection of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, right? People are saying now that again the war is escalating in the Middle East and we are going to have an all-out war because of, you know, different political pressures in the U.S. and in Israel and so on. Allah knows best. We have no view on this. And my advice to myself and all of you is stay out of discussions which have no value. Stay out of discussions that have no value, right? Because we have no control over the situation. Nobody is asking for our opinion. What’s the point in wasting time talking about things which we have no control over? So, forget that. But, if you think about this and say, okay, there is a war. If the war happens, we want Allah to protect us. So, what is our plan? If you say, for example, you ask people that, look, looks like the war is imminent, what should you do? The people will say go fill up gas in your car, we don’t know if we get petrol and diesel, buy provisions, right, stock up and so on and so on and so on, all of which is fine, nothing wrong with that, but do we say let us make istighfar, let us make tawbah, let us examine our lives to see what is it that we are doing that displeases Allahﷻ ta’ala? That is the meaning of the hadith. The meaning of this hadith is this: Ihfaz Allah, ihfaz ak means this take care of Allah, take care of the rights of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, take care of what Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala has made for upon you, and Allah will take care of you. Allah will protect you if Allah ta’ala protects you, your car will not run out of gas, your house will not run out of food, nothing will happen. No matter what is happening in the world, Allahﷻ may keep you safe by preventing the war. Or He may keep you safe in the middle of the war. It’s up to Allahﷻ. It’s up to Allahﷻ. But you will be safe, I will be safe, provided Allahﷻ is pleased with us.

So as the point of hadith, the point of these reminders is to actually practically apply this in our lives, not simply read the hadith. Therefore since I read the hadith now I am going to sit and make muhasiba of my own life and say what is in my life which is right and what is in my life which is wrong which I must correct. If I am not doing this then it’s a waste of time reading hadith. Yeh sab se behtareen hai ke main ne yahan jana ke main ne yeh hadith jana aur main ne yeh nahi kiya. Allah hamare paas muskaraaye. Toh yeh bhi sochein, main kya karunga? Main kaise mehfooz hoon ke Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala mere sath mohabbat karta hai? Main apni Nabi ko sirf acha rakhunga. Aur phir Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam ne kaha ke agar aap chahte hain toh Allah se acha rakhein. Agar aap apne sath paida karenge toh Allah se apne sath paida karenge. Don’t demean yourself by extending your hand in front of another human being. What can a person do? He cannot do anything. There are these stories which, Allah knows if they are true or not, but at least good to illustrate and good as understanding. And the story is that the Emperor Jahangir, he had a big bell installed at the door of his Darbar and he had it proclaimed that anybody, if he wanted to see the king, if he had any petition, he could come and ring the bell and he could go meet the king. Toh woh kehte hain ke yeh baarun aadmi, yeh khaan, yeh farmer, uske tor par aisi tarah zaroori tha. Toh woh khan ko dekha gaya aur jab woh iske haathon ko rang karne ke liye raha tha. Woh dekha ke khan darbaar mein tha. He was alone and he was on his musalla and his hands were raised and he was asking Allahﷻ so the man did not ring the bell. He turned around and went back. So somebody asked him you came there to talk to the king why did you not ring the bell? Is it because you didn’t want to disturb him because he is praying? He said no, no, nothing to disturb us. He said I see that he is begging Allah Allah for what he wants. I can do the same thing. Why should I ask him? I’ll ask directly. Why do I need to ask the king? Allahﷻ has opened the door and left the door for all of us, alhamdulillah. Allah said, you ask me, I will give you. Allah did not say, ask through this one, that one, go to so and so, ask him. No. Ask me. Call on me.

So he… This king is, you know, he has nothing. He is asking Allah Subh’anaHu Wa Ta-A’la, I can ask Allah myself. So this is the beauty and the dignity of Islam that Allah Subh’anaHu Wa Ta-A’la gave us the ability to approach Him directly, to ask Him directly, to seek forgiveness. That’s why I remind myself and you, no matter what’s happening in the world, we ask Allah. We ask Allah for protection. Let us look at our own lives and see what is in my life that needs to be corrected. What should become obedient to Allah and do that, become obedient, change that. Whatever needs to be changed, change it. And then inshaAllah we look forward to the protection of Allah.
