Alhamdulillah Rabbil Alameen.
Wa Salatu Wa Salamu Alaa Ashrafil Anbiya wal Mursaleen.
Muhammadur Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Alaa Alihi wa Sahbihi wa Sallam.
Tasleeman kathiran kathira.
Faham abadu?
My brothers and sisters,
I remind myself and you that Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala tests and we ask Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala to save us from His tests.
Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala tested the Sahaba.
And the name of the test was Hudaybiyah.
I call this the graduation of the Sahaba.
After the years in Makkah and the Hijrah and the battles in Madinah,
this was the final exam to test their obedience in stressful conditions.
So Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala tested them with a test so severe
that had it not been for the help of Allah,
it could have proven fatal for them and Islam.
But Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala tests the pious to strengthen, not to destroy.
And so He supports them and He grants them patience.
The test was so severe that Umar bin al-Khattab r.a became the unconscious voice of many.
He asked the questions, he asked and I’m not going into the details of this, InshaAllah.
Someday when you have some patience, we’ll sit and talk about this here.
He asked the questions he asked and then he left the place.
Now think about this, you know, we read these stories.
Think about one very simple question.
The thing that struck me was,
how come Sayyidina Umar r.a just left the place without asking permission to leave the Majlis of Rasool Allah ?
No Sahabi ever did that.
To simply get up and walk away when the Imam is sitting here and giving a khutbah or giving a dars or giving a khatira,
just walk away, show your back and then also chat with your friends on the way.
This is our culture.
These are our akhlaq.
These are not the akhlaq of the Sahaba.
Ridh ma’am laayhi alayhi majma’in.
If they came to the Majlis of the Rasool Allah and if they had to leave for any reason they told him in advance,
Ya Rasool Allah, I have to run for this thing, please forgive me.
This is the akhlaq of the Muslim. This is what you are supposed to do.
They never ever left without permission.
Here is Umar ibn al-Khattab, not just anyone,
here is Umar ibn al-Khattab r.a who goes away.
And from whatever I have read of the seerah, he didn’t ask anybody’s permission.
He didn’t ask the Bishr al-Sarab alayhi salam.
He didn’t say, Ya Rasool Allah, can I leave? I am sorry, I am very anguished.
No, he went.
And think about this.
Rasool Allah didn’t stop him.
He did not even question him, Ya Umar, why did you leave? No.
Why?
Because he understood the anguish of Umar.
He understood that this is not only the anguish of Umar ibn al-Khattab,
this is the anguish of all the Sahaba.
But, did he change his position?
Did he say to himself,
Hold on, what am I doing now here? I am going to lose all these people.
I will have no followers left.
Let me go back. No.
This is the test.
They had been told, you will obey whether you like it or not.
So now you don’t like it.
That is the test.
Will the, will the,
Will the action change? Will the Nabi change his decision? No.
He will not change his decision.
We say he is guided by Allah, and of course he is guided by Allah.
We say he was receiving Wahi, yes, receiving Wahi.
But there is no actual record of Jibreel coming there and talking to him.
So he was receiving Wahi in different ways, right?
He was being guided by Allah in different ways.
Abu Bakr al-Siddiq r.a said,
Hold on to his stirrup.
He said to Sayyidina Muhammad,
He said, hold his stirrup.
Because he is guided by his Rabb, and his Rabb will not abandon him.
My brothers and sisters,
I am not saying that,
I am not saying that,
I am not saying that,
My brothers and sisters, think about that.
And then what happens?
Allah s.w.t. turns the screw some more.
They are already anguished about a treaty which is so unequal.
Before the treaty can be written down,
Before the treaty can be written down,
Abu Jindal, who is the son of the man writing the treaty,
negotiating on behalf of the Quraysh Suhail bin Amr,
he turns up.
Now he had been imprisoned by his father because he accepted Islam.
And he manages to escape.
He doesn’t know what’s going on.
Somebody told him Rasool Allah s.a.w. is in Hudaybiyah.
So he said, good, let me go and, you know,
meet the Nabi s.a.w.
and be with him.
So he goes there. He has no clue what’s going on.
He goes there. He sees his father there.
And Suhail bin Amr says,
Give the man back to us because he is ours.
And we just agreed on the treaty
that if one of our people comes to you,
you have to return him.
As if the treaty was not tough enough.
Allah s.w.t. has said,
You have to send your son back to you.
You have to send your son back to you.
That’s the way it is.
This is the way it is.
If you can’t do it,
you can’t do it.
You can’t do it.
But if you can,
you can do it.
But if you can’t do it,
you can’t do it.
So you have to do it.
And the reason,
the reason why I am saying this,
is because I am not saying,
that you should go to your son.
You should go to your son.
Is it difficult?
It is difficult.
The reason I am telling you is,
my son is not a son
who is not a son of Allah.
He is not a son of Allah.
He is not a son of Allah.
He is not a son of Allah.
How can I tell him that
he is not a son of Allah?
He is not a son of Allah.
That’s why I am asking you.
He says, my sword is loose. I made it loose in the scabbard.
Pull it out. Kill your father.
Escape.
Abhijit says, no, I will not do that.
And then the whole story.
The point I’m making is
that Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala tests.
And the Sahaba
were going through this test.
Treat is signed.
Nabi salallahu alaihi wasalam then
commands the Sahaba,
swell my number leaves
because treat is signed.
He goes away. His job is over.
Now Rasool Allah salallahu alaihi wasalam says to the Sahaba,
shave your heads
and the sacrificial animals which you brought
slaughter the animals.
For the first time in the history of the seerah,
the Sahaba did not move from their places.
They continued.
They didn’t refuse.
They didn’t say we will not do it.
They just sat.
The Rasool Allah salallahu alaihi wasalam
see the kindness of the Rasool Allah salallahu alaihi wasalam.
He did not repeat his command.
If he had repeated his command,
they had still disobeyed him.
It was a big fitna.
Because to directly disobey
the command of the Rasool is kufr.
So Rasool Allah salallahu alaihi wasalam
didn’t put them into that kind of a,
test.
He got up and went into his tent.
Now in the tent was our mother,
his wife,
Umm Salama radiyallahu anha.
And she said,
Ya Rasool Allah, what happened?
She saw his face.
She said,
Ya Rasool Allah, what happened?
You are looking very upset.
He said,
My Ummah is destroying itself.
My people are destroying themselves.
She said,
What happened?
He told her,
This is what happened.
I commanded them.
They are not obeying.
She said,
Ya Rasool Allah,
this is a very,
very difficult time for them.
It has never happened before.
They don’t know how to deal with it.
So my advice to you,
you go out,
you get your,
shave your head,
you sacrifice your animals,
inshallah they will follow.
What is his response?
Does he say,
Excuse me, hold on a second.
Who is getting,
you, me?
I am supposed to obey you?
I am the Rasool or you are the Rasool?
Does he say all this?
No.
He accepts the advice of his wife.
He is the Rasool.
He is the one getting Wahi.
She is not getting Wahi.
He accepts the advice of his wife.
He goes out.
He calls Sayyidina Ali.
He says,
Shave my head, bring the animals.
And he does,
he starts the process
and all the Sahaba,
as one person,
as one man,
they get up
and they shave each other’s heads
and they sacrifice the animals
and they are weeping
and in some cases,
there are tears mixed with the blood
because they are, you know, shaving
and they nick something.
Huh?
Ajeeb, see the scene.
And Allah reveals,
Innaa Fathahna Laka Fathah Mubeenah
Allah says,
Verily today,
we have granted you a
manifest victory.
You are victorious.
What’s the victory?
They came with the promise to do Umrah
based on the word of the Nabi
alayhi salatu was salam.
And they could not do Umrah.
They had to return.
Their test was not between Haram and Halal.
Our problem is,
should I sell this or not sell this?
One is Halal, one is Haram.
Their test was,
their test was,
we came to do the Ibadah of Allah,
Subhanahu wa ta’ala,
we came to do Ta’af of the Kaaba.
And we are not able to do that.
That was the test.
They could not do that.
So on the surface,
they failed in their goal,
in their aim.
Allah says,
No, you did not.
You see, you are victorious.
We have granted you a great victory.
What is that victory?
Graduation in the test.
What was the test?
The test of followership,
not leadership.
Allah did not say,
all of you are leaders.
No, Allah says,
you are followers of my Nabi alayhi salatu was salam.
Follow the Nabi.
The one who obeys Allah and his Nabi,
only that person has achieved final success.
And that is why Allah,
I told you the two stories of the seerah are supported by the Quran.
And that’s why Allah,
set the tone and commanded us to obey our leaders and told us what to do.
If we have a disagreement with the leadership,
Allah said,
Ya ayyuha allatheena amanu,
aateehu allaha wa aateehu rasoola wa uli al amri minkum.
Fa in tanaza’atum fee shayyin,
farudduhu ila Allahi wa rasoolihi.
In kuntum tub’inuna billahi wa al yawmil aakhiri,
thalika khayrun wa ahsan uthabilah.
In surah An-Nisa,
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala said,
O believers,
obey Allah and obey the Messenger salallahu alayhi wa sallam.
And obey those in authority among you,
obey your leaders.
Should you disagree on anything,
meaning what?
With whom?
With Allah?
With the Messenger?
Should you disagree with your leaders?
Obey Allah and His Rasool and the leaders.
If you disagree with the leaders on anything,
what should you do?
Return to Allah and His Rasool.
Rudduhu ila Allahi wa rasoolihi.
Return to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.
Refer it back to the Kalam of Allah.
Refer it back to the Kalam of Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
If you truly believe in Allah,
conditional statement,
and in the last day,
and that is the best and fairest resolution.
This is what we have been told.
The Khulafa al-Rashida
are the best examples of leaders in this mold
of unmatched piety combined with competence and wisdom,
both together.
And in the same initial period,
we also have the story of what happened
when people questioned the leaders’ wisdom
based on their own understanding and interpretation of Islam.
It’s interesting to note that nobody questioned
in any of these fitan which came later,
nobody questioned the piety of the Khalifa.
But they disagreed with some of his decisions.
Not all, some decisions.
Now this is not the place to go into the details of all that.
Again, something to be,
those of you who are interested, I am here.
If you are not interested, I am still here.
This is a study, history to be studied in great depth
for the lessons that it contains,
which are so incredibly valid and valuable today.
Lessons about the etiquette of disagreement.
Because history shows us that invariably,
without exception,
it was not the disagreement,
but the way in which it was handled,
which caused the damage.
Unity in the Ummah is to obey Allah
and His Messenger
and to do that unconditionally.
Unity is not agreeing on one day for Eid
or one day for something else.
That’s not unity.
Unity is to obey Allah.
It is to obey Allah and His Messenger .
Go back to the Kitab of Allah.
Go back to the Hadith of Rasool .
See what he said.
Do that.
That is unity.
As defined by the Book of Allah.
This is our biggest challenge.
To submit ourselves to the Book of Allah.
And to the Hukm of His Nabi .
We must understand, my brothers and sisters,
that we have a divine religion based on the Book of Allah
and the teachings of His Messenger .
Anyone who obeys Allah in the way of His Messenger.
Not anyone who obeys Allah the way he thinks. No.
Obedience to Allah in the way of Muhammad .
This is the condition. The two have to be together.
Anyone who obeys Allah in the way of His Messenger has succeeded.
And anyone who does not follow this formula, irrespective of his reason, has failed.
Success and failure are decided at the end of the race.
To compromise final victory for the sake of temporary convenience in this life
makes zero sense at all.
Success and victory are only from Allah.
And the help of Allah comes to the obedient.
Not to the disobedient.
Nor to those who obey selectively.
Because selective obedience is the worst form of disobedience.
Because it is arrogance.
May Allah save us from ourselves.
