Lessons from Hatim Al Asamm – 3 – What sacrifice really means

Auto-generated transcript:

We have been looking at the advice of and the lessons from the great scholar Hatim al-Assam, the student of Shaikh Shaqeeq al-Balkhi and a contemporary of Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal.

I remind myself and you that the purpose of all of this is for us to take stock of our own lives and to change our own lives. It’s not just to sit and listen, but to implement, because knowledge which is not implemented does not benefit. Knowing the recipe of something will not fill your belly. You have to cook that food and eat it. Knowing the name of a medicine that cures your illness will not cure the illness. You have to take the medicine. You say, no, I know the medicine, but the pain is still there. the illness is still there because you are not eating the medicine. You only know the name. So, similarly, just knowing something is not sufficient. We have to know. If you don’t know, then you are in even worse place because you don’t even know. But once you know, if you don’t implement that, if you don’t take that medicine, you don’t eat that food,

Whatever you have will perish, whatever you have will end. But whatever Allah has, or whatever is with Allah is everlasting. That will remain.

Ma indakum, whatever is with you, yanfadu, will finish. Wa ma inda Allahi, waq. What is with Allah remains. And Allah said, and we will certainly reward the allatheena sabaru, people who have sabar,

The first is مَعِنْدَكُمْ يَنْفَضُوا وَمَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ بَقُّ Whatever is with me, whatever is with you, Allah is saying, we’ll finish. What is with Allah remains. If you link this to the other ayat of the Quran where Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala said

Allah said, you cannot reach the level of birr, you cannot reach the level of piety until you spend in the path of Allah that which you love the most. And Allah is aware of your intentions.

Now, if you see the meaning of these two ayat, it is saying the same thing.

If I sell my car to Abhishek bhai, I say I have sacrificed my car. How is it a sacrifice? You sold it, you got a price for it.

So how is it a sacrifice? It’s not a sacrifice, it’s a sale. I didn’t give it to him as a gift, I gave it.

For something to be a sacrifice, there are two conditions. First condition is you must own that thing. thing. I cannot say I will sacrifice your car to him. It’s not my car, it’s your car. How can I sacrifice it? Who am I? So, first condition of sacrifice is you must own that thing. Second condition of sacrifice is that thing which you own, when you give it to somebody, you must not take any compensation. Then it’s a sacrifice. If you are taking any compensation,

मिल्कियत होने की शर्त क्या है what is the condition that something what is the sign that something you own

if you have to give up at some point it’s not yours.

if I said the house I’m living in my house. How is that when I die they will take my body out of here. House will be here. I will be gone. So how is it in my house?

They found him sleeping in the minth ڈربار डरबारال in front of the throne. So, the security guards and so on, they caught hold of him and said, what are you doing here? He said, this is a Sarai, this is a hotel. Not a hotel, Sarai, you know, a way stop. So, they said, you are mad. This is the palace of the king. How do you say it’s a Sarai? So, they brought him in front of the king, Ibrahim A.S. So, Ibrahim A.S. asked him, what are you doing? He said, I am sleeping in a Sarai, your people are disturbing me and you know. So, Bani Utham said, this is not a palace, this is my house, this is my palace.

The man said, who was here before you? He said, my father. He said, who was here before your father? He said, my grandfather.

He said, who will be here after you are dead? My son. Who will be there after him? His son. He said, a place in which people are coming and going, what do you call it?

Place in which people are coming and going, ek aaya ek gaya. I am sleeping here, how is it your parents, it’s not yours,

so whatever we have, our health, if it is my health, then I must say, and if I say that I will sound like a fool, my health, I will have perfect health for the, a nonsense. How will you have? You have no control over it. You have no control over it.

Your wealth can be guaranteed that I will have whatever I have today. I will have at least this much forever. No.

Same thing. Children, power, authority. You may have the biggest job. You find this happening with a lot of these civil servants, IS officers, IPS officers. When they are in service, They will have, you know, the siren on the car and the Lal Bhatti and the blue Bhatti and what not, lights flashing and you will have an escort in front, escort behind, flag on the car.

The minute he retires, literally the day he retires, official car will go. No more red light, blue light, green light. No more flags, no more escorts, no more nothing.

I am going to the US, so I will transfer my funds from here to the US so that they are there when I reach. I am from the US, I am coming to India, so I will transfer my funds from my US account to my Indian account so that when I come here, I have got some spending money.

Same thing.

So, Hathim R. R. is saying, I like something, I want this, send it ahead. Because I am going there, I need this thing there.

If I hang on to it here, I will have to leave it here.

This transfer from this account to that account can only happen while I am alive. After I am dead, the transfer is gone. Account is over because you have died.

And the other ayah is saying the same thing. If you want to closeness to Allahﷻ, give up that which you love. Remove that which you love and substitute Allahﷻ in its grace.

That which you love the most.

So, that’s the first part of the Ayah. Second part of the Ayah is the Rahmat of Allahﷻ. Allah is saying, the one who is steadfast, I will reward him according to the best of his deeds.

Think of this, our whole life, we have done so many things, Alhamdulillah, by the grace of Allahﷻ, you are praying five times Salah in the Masjid, Alhamdulillah.

according to the hajj. Everything according to the ahsan of his aamal. The best of his deeds.

So, Hatim al-Assam Ramatullah is saying, therefore, anything that I loved,

I sent it ahead. Because I want it to remain. I don’t want to lose it. So, I send it off.

This is the thing that I remind myself and you, this is what we need to cultivate. it. We need to cultivate the ability to think according to the Qur’an. The purpose of the Qur’an is to become the lens through which we see life. So if I take off my glasses, it looks blood. I put on my glasses, I can see clearly. Those glasses are the Kalam of Allahﷻ look at life through the Quran whatever it is look at life from the perspective of the Quran who is a big man who is a small man

not. Alhamdulillah, you say, inshallah, this person is so, has such beautiful akhlaq and, you know, following the sunnah and so on, so inshallah this person, may Allah give him, keep him close to himself. Duaab kar sakte. Magar, dekhe any more, so how do you know? Innam ala’amalu min niyat.

Amal is based on the niyat. Amal is not based on the external shape or form. And the niyat only Allah knows. The best of you, the most honoured of you with Allah is the one who has the مستقل.

We ask Allah to enable us to use the Qur’an al-Kareem to see the world, to appreciate the world, to judge the world in a way that Allah has taught us and to try to live our lives in a way that is shown to us by Rasulullah ﷺ
