Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem, Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Alameen, wa salatu wa salamu ala al-sharafi al-anbiya wal-mursaleen, Muhammad wa Rasulullah ﷺ, tasbihim an katira an katira. On my badu, my brothers and sisters, yesterday my friend Babi asked me this question: he said he saw a Instagram or something, where one of the so-called sheikhs is telling somebody that not to forgive somebody is it a sin? Somebody did something wrong, then they came and apologized. They came and they seek forgiveness.
But you refuse to forgive. Even though they are seeking forgiveness, you refuse to forgive. Is that a sin?
And this person with great authority, he says it is not a sin. And then as his dalil, he says even Yaqub عليه السلام, the father of Yusuf عليه السلام and his brothers, refused to forgive his sons when they begged for forgiveness. Forgiveness.
And then he added some masala of his own and he said that Yaqub used to be insulted by his other sons and by his daughters-in-law and by his grandchildren and they all called him that, they all said that, “You are mad.” And so, when these sons came and begged for forgiveness, Yaqub, even though he was an abhi and he also said that knowing he was an abhi they still insulted him and he said that even though he was an abhi he said I refuse to forgive you and he recited the ayat of the Quran may Allah have mercy these people; they say anything. He said, “Yaqub,” and he translates this to mean he said, “I will not forgive you, I will not seek forgiveness for you.”
May Allah have mercy on us. Somebody who deliberately—and I’m saying deliberately because the concerned person I know knows Arabic and he knows the Quran and he knows the translation of the Quran—somebody who deliberately mistranslates the Quran al-Karim to prove some nonsensical point that he’s making, this is between you and Allah. All I can say is, may Allah have mercy on him. I remind myself anew. Well, first of all, let us deal with this false dalil that this person gave.
The story of Yusuf, we know Allah revealed an entire surah on that. And we know that at the end, when his brothers realized that they had committed this crime, time, they asked Yusuf عليه السلام himself for forgiveness and they came and asked their father for forgiveness and they asked him to seek forgiveness for them with Allah. Allahﷻ mentions in Surat Yusuf: qalu ya abana astaghfir lana dhunubana inna kuna khati’in.
Qalu, they said, they begged, “Ya abana, O our father, astaghfir lana,” please pray for the forgiveness of our sins, “astaghfir lana dhunubana,” forgiveness for our sins, “inna kuna khati’een,” certainly we are sinful, we have been sinful. Qala, so he said, sawfa tomorrow astaghfir lakum rabbi, “I will pray to my Rabb for your Forgiveness.” Saufa astaghfiru lakum Rabbi. Tomorrow I will pray for Forgiveness, for your Forgiveness. I will pray to my Rabb for your Forgiveness. Innahu huwal ghafoorur rahim. This is the final dalil as far as I am concerned. Innahu huwal ghafoorur rahim. He alone is indeed the All-Forgiving, Most Merciful, and this is from the meaning and tafsir of Al-Qur’an from Mustafa Khattab, Damat Barkat Hume, and from others. Now, think about this, the man is translating sawfa as “I will not do.”
If that is the case, Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala said in Surat al-Duha to Rasulullah ﷺ: wala sawfa yu’tiika rabbuka fatardha, wala sawfa yu’tiika rabbuka fatardha.
Tomorrow, meaning in the akhirah, your Rabb will make you pleased; tomorrow your Rabb will please you while a sofa yakin and truly you tika will give you a lot book of atarda; your rub will give you until you are pleased tomorrow; your rub will give you until you are pleased if we are going to translate sofa as not, sofa as “I will not,” then it means Allahﷻ is saying to Mr. Salim, “Tomorrow I will not give you…”
“I will not give you until you are pleased.” What will he not give to please? Number one. Number two, the same ayah. He said,
He said,
Now if he is not going to ask for forgiveness, why is he saying innahu ghafoor rahein?
When he is not asking for forgiveness, when he is not asking for prayer, then what is the problem if Allah is not asking for forgiveness?
He will say Allah is the most forgiving because I am going to ask him for forgiveness and he is the most forgiving. That is the logical understanding now. I will not ask for forgiveness. Then why will I say he is ghafoor rahein? So, I am saying all this because to warn myself and to warn all of you. Do not… First of all, if you don’t know something, say, “I don’t know.”
That is the sensible thing to do. That is the safe thing to do. That is the… Imam Malik said, “I don’t know, laa adhiri, wallahu aalam,” Allah knows best, is the shield of the believer. To say, “I don’t know,” is the shield of the believer. A man came to Imam Malik Rahatul Ali. Imam Malik was the Khatib and Imam of Majid-e-Nabawi-e-Sharif and he was an Imam; in his time he was acknowledged worldwide to the extent that people, muftis in different parts of the Islamic world, when people went to them to ask for fatwa, they used to say, how can I give fatwa when Malik is in Madinah?
How can I give a fatwa when Malik is in Madinah? Not that Malik prohibited them, but this was the level of adab. So, a man came to a Malik, Rahul Ali from Kufa, and he said, “I have been sent by my people to ask you for some answers to questions we have. I have come with 40 questions.” Imam Malik said, “Ask.” And the man asked question after question after question. Imam Malik answered 8 questions out of 40. He answered 8 questions. For 32 questions, Imam Malik said, “Allah knows best.” So, this man said, when the whole thing finished, the man said, now what do I go and tell my people? Because I came here because people said you are such a big alim and this and this. But you have not answered. You answered only eight questions out of forty. What will I tell my people? But Malik said, that is very simple. Tell your people you are mistaken. Malik is not a big alim. Your job is over. Why are you worried? it? Say that. Then he said, “La adhiri wa la alam” is the shield of the believer. If you don’t know something, say, “I don’t know.” He said, how can I say, give you an answer when I am not sure? I will go, I will research, I will find out, I will check. Then I can answer you. Right? No, I don’t know. So, I warn myself when you don’t fall into this step to authoritatively first of all give a wrong answer telling somebody it is okay not to forgive
number one, number two; and then to give a dalil quoting Quran and deliberately mistranslating that
May Allah have mercy on us, this is literally it’s a crime. Now what is the situation? What is the actual situation?
The actual situation is that first of all Rasulullah ﷺ said,
It is not lawful, it is haram, it is not lawful for a Muslim to forsake his Muslim brother beyond three days. Meaning for three days,
forsaking means what? Means he has done something wrong. I am angry with you. I will not speak to you. If you say salaam, I will not say walaikum salaam. I will not say salaam to you. I turn my face away from you. This is the meaning of forsaking. Nabi said, it is haram to do that for more than three days. He said, “And whosoever does so for more than three days and dies, will certainly enter Jahannam.”
Who is entering Jahannam? Not the one who did the… who did the wrong, the one who refused to forgive.
So, you tell me whether refusing to forgive is a sin or not a sin, okay? And this is a Sayyid Hadith in Suhaib Nabi Dawood.
Sayyid Aisha Siddiqa Radiyallahu Anha is asking Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, “Ya Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam,” if I find Daylatul Qadr in Ramadan, in the last ten nights of Ramadan, she says, “Ya Rasulullah,” if I find Daylatul Qadr, what dua should I make? What is the dua he is teaching her?
O Allah, you are forgiving and generous. You are the one who forgives. You love to forgive.
So, forgive me.
Then in the hadith in Imam, Musnad Imam Ahmad, and this hadith is That is, “Allahumma innaka afu’un kareem, afu’un tuhibbu’il afu’u’afwani,” is in Tirmidhi. And then in a hadith in Muznad ibn Ahmad, Abdullah ibn Amr, radiyallahu anhu, radiyallahu anhu ma’am, he reported that Rasulullah ﷺ said, be merciful to others and you will receive mercy. Forgive others and Allah will forgive you. This is a amr, it’s a hukum of the Rasul ﷺ. He’s saying, forgive others, Allah will forgive you. So if somebody deliberately says, “I will not forgive,” what is he saying? I will not obey the Rasul ﷺ. Is that a sin? If you knowingly, deliberately say, “I will not obey Muhammad ﷺ,” you have left Islam.
You are a murtad. Forget about sin. You have gone out of Islam. Knowingly, understanding with understanding, knowingly if somebody says, “I will not obey the Rasool alayhi salatu wa salam,” he has ceased to be a Muslim. Forget about sin. You have left Islam itself. Right?
Abdullah ibn Abar ibn al-Asr narrated from Rasulullah ﷺ that he said when he was on the mimbar, he’s doing, you know, he’s doing the khutbah, he said, show mercy and you will be shown mercy. Forgive and Allah Subh’anaHu Wa Ta-A’la will forgive you. In another beautiful hadith, Abdul Rahman ibn Awf r.a. said that Rasulullah ﷺ said, there are three things concerning which by the one in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad ﷺ, I would certainly swear an oath. First thing is, wealth does not decrease
because of charity. So, give charity. Wealth does not decrease because of charity. So, So, give charity. Number two, no man forgives another for some mistreatment, seeking thereby the pleasure of Allah, but Allah will raise him in status thereby. Because of that, Allah will raise his status. And the third is, no one asks people… If you have a need, you ask people, you beg from people, but Allah will increase him in poverty. If you ask people instead of asking Allah, Allah will increase you in poverty. Musnad Imam Ahmad. Another hadith in Musnad Imam Ahmad, Ubadah ibn Samit , he said, “I heard Rasulullah ﷺ saying, there is no man who suffers an injury to his body, then then forgives the one who caused it, as an act of charity. But Allah will absolve his sins, commensurate with the extent of his charity.”
So somebody caused you some harm, and bodily means not necessarily physical, physical, emotional, mental, in terms of property or rights, whatever. Somebody caused you some harm, Nabi said that if you forgive that person for the sake of Allah, Allah will forgive your sins equal to that, right? In another hadith, so beautiful,
Rasool Allah said, how beautiful is it, how beautiful is the situation of the believer, how beautiful is the situation of the believer. If he is happy, if he has plenty, if Allah has has rewarded him, has given him, blessed him, then he is thankful to Allah, he shows, expresses his gratitude and Allah is pleased with him. And on the opposite side, if he suffers a loss, he has sabr and Allah is pleased with him. So, both situations, huh? If he has gain, he is thankful, so Allah is pleased with him. And if he has a loss, he has sabr, he doesn’t go around complaining this and that, Allah is pleased with him.
So that’s why, if a person tries to harm you, he hasn’t actually harmed you. He has never harmed you, he has not harmed you. He tries. His trying to harm you is a sin on him and Allah will punish him or forgive him depending on whatever Allah wants to do. But as far as you are concerned, he has not harmed you. He has done you the greatest favor by opening the door for you of the greatest goodness, which is Allah’s forgiveness.
Allah will forgive you. So by trying to harm you, this person has actually opened the door of goodness for you, right? That is why somebody came to Amashafi Rawatul Ali and they said to him that, “so-and-so is doing ghibat against you,” so-and-so is doing ghibat against you. Now Amashafi Rawatul Ali sent him some fruits as a gift.
The man was surprised, said, what is this gift for? He said, no, you are giving me your good deeds. Deeds, so I’m… I think I should respond, so here is some fruit for you.’ Because if you are doing ghibat, then your good deeds are going to the person whose ghibat you are doing. Said, you are… Thank you for giving me good deeds. Here is some fruits.
Finally, I’ll give you the biggest of dalail which is the Kitab of Allah and with that I rest my case. This. In Surah Ash-Shura, Allah said, “Fa man aafa wa aslaha fa ajirhu ala Allah. Innahu la yuhibbu zhalimeen.” Allah said, “And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it, but whoever pardons and makes the reconciliation, his reward is due from Allah. Indeed, he does not like wrongdoers.” Come on alpha was la for a jewel Allah the one who forgives and reconciles and in the ayat like this where Allahﷻ has not specified the reward is the reward is with Allah huh well a taliban of summa Ophelia home in karate I you what Allah has kept hidden for them will please them; Allah is not not saying what it is. All of these ayat are ayat of great bashara because Allah is saying the reward is so much I will not tell you exactly how much. Reward is with Allah, means what? How much will it be? In keeping with Allah’s magnificence and grace. And then Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala said in Surat al-Nur, the famous ayat, ayat which was revealed because Because when Abogar Siddiq Radhe Lanu, when he heard that his relative Mista, who Sayyidina Abogar Siddiq Radhe Lanu used to support him financially, this man slandered Sayyidina Ayesha Siddiq Radhe Lanu.
So, obviously, Sayyidina Abogar Siddiq Radhe Lanu had grounds for being upset. Said, he was justifiably angry with him, so he said, “I will stop my charity to this man.”
And then listen to this, then Allah said, “Ala tuhibbuna ayyaghfirallahu lakum, wallahu ghafuruhim.” Allah said, “Do not let the people of virtue and affluence among you.” And this is a reference to Abu Karisuddin S.A.W. Allah said, we have given you virtue and we have given you affluence. He said, do not let the people of virtue and affluence among you swear to suspend donations to their relatives, the needy, the immigrants in the cause of Allah. Let them pardon and forgive. This is the Qur’an, Allah is saying, let them pardon and forgive. If Allah is saying, pardon and forgive, and somebody says, “I will not pardon,” and you say that is not a sin what are you talking about? What are you talking about to go directly against a hukum of allah is not a sin then what is the sin please give me a definition
Allah saying let them pardon and forgive and then in reinforcement of that Allah said
Do you not love that Allah should forgive you? What does it mean?
Allah is saying, forgive them. Don’t you want Allah to forgive you? What does it mean?
It means Allah is giving a hukum – forgive them. And if you don’t forgive them, then maybe Allah will not forgive you.
Allah is saying, forgive them, don’t you want Allah to forgive you? What does it mean?
It means Allah is giving a hukum – forgive them. And if you don’t forgive them, then maybe Allah will not forgive you. I’m saying maybe deliberately because I don’t want to speak on behalf of Allah. But the point I’m saying is, this is the meaning of it. Don’t you want, do you not love to be forgiven by Allah? And Allah is all-forgiving, Most Merciful be Allah, Ghafur-ur-Rahim. So here is the hukum of Allah, direct hukum of Allah saying, forgive those who have transgressed against you.
Don’t say, “I refuse to forgive.”
Because whatever that person did, whoever it is, and whatever it is it is, that is restricted to this dunya.
Nobody can harm your Akhirah. Only you can harm your Akhirah, nobody can harm your Akhirah. I cannot harm your Akhirah, you cannot harm my Akhirah. I can only have my own so when you say I will not forgive you are having your own
and nobody can give you this dalil or some fatwa or some vijaya to go against the order of allah and the order of his nabi so i remind myself when you let us not play games with the kitab of allah and let us not listen to people like this who are
If anyone, may Allah protect us from all forms of injustice. But if it happens, if somebody harms you, and this does not mean if somebody harms you, then don’t take action against them or don’t resort to whatever legal, you know, way of
recompense you have; that doesn’t mean that you can’t do that, you have got a right to do that, you will go to the police, you could go to court and so on and so forth, this you can do there’s no harm in that and there is that’s not prohibited but superior to that is if you forgive the person and remember when we are saying forgive the person we are saying forgive the person without that person asking forgiveness so how about when the person himself comes and asks for forgiveness and you say “I will not forgive” in that in life when I learned you fear Allah, fear Allah if you do that maybe Allah will say “I will not forgive you,” that is in the Akira what will happen to you your forgiveness is for this dunya unless forgiveness in the Akira whoever harmed you harmed you in this dunya right don’t let that harm convert it convert itself into a harm for you in the akhira forgive people it’s not worth it it’s not worth carrying all that garbage in your heart forgive people clean your heart leave it to allah and remember one very very important thing in all of this nobody can do anything to you that allah did not agree
Whatever happened to you is from Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala. It’s not that person. That person has no khudrat awil. So, if Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala decreed that some harm should come to me, then I need to make istighfar. I need to seek forgiveness before Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala. Allah, what happened to me? Why did this happen to me? What did I do? Something I did.
If I did not do anything, how come this harm happened to me?
So, this is a warning from you. So, let me make istighfar. I must make istighfar. Forget about it. Forgive the other person. I seek forgiveness for myself and say, “Allah forgive me because this harm happened to me, this is a sign.”
Then maybe you are not pleased with me, so I beg you, I seek forgiveness, Ya Allah be pleased with me, Ya Allah do not be angry with me. We ask Allahﷻ to forgive us, we ask Allahﷻ to save us from all harm, we ask Allah to make us among those who are forgiving of others, we ask Allahﷻ to help us to live a life which is a life of goodness which pleases Allah and to save us from all that displeases Allah. Wa sallamu ala Nabeel Kareem wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajma’in. Bi Rahmatika Ya Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu.
